KEY TAKEAWAYS

Faced with space-constrained urban depots and inconsistent practices, the Transports publics de la région lausannoise (tl) (Lausanne, Switzerland) reviewed and harmonized their parking and planning rules, then integrated them into HASTUS YardAssistant and PlanFleet.

The result: a 97% parking operation success rate, unified practices across teams, and increased day-to-day operational reliability.

Context

The tl operate several highly constrained urban depots, where available space, vehicle density, and the sequence of activities require careful coordination. Every evening, teams need to reposition vehicles without blocking other vehicle movements within the depot.

For several years, depot operations relied mainly on manual or semi-manual assignments. Vehicle location information was not fully leveraged, and practices varied from one team to another. This made daily management more vulnerable and more dependent on individual experience.

The tl therefore wanted to review, standardize, and digitalize their procedures as well as their parking and planning rules.

Challenges

The tl needed to address several operational challenges in their depots:

  • Review and standardize parking procedures and criteria
  • Improve the reliability of vehicle assignments
  • Better coordinate washing, preparation, and light maintenance
  • Harmonize practices across teams
  • Digitalize procedures as well as real-time and planning constraints
  • Support fleet evolution, including progressive electrification, without adding weight to daily operations

To address these challenges, the tl first harmonized their practices, then integrated them into HASTUS.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

Standardizing practices

The tl first reviewed and harmonized their parking and planning rules to establish a shared framework for all teams. This standardization helped reduce variation across practices, simplify day-to-day coordination, and free up more time for operational priorities.

Supporting execution with HASTUS

They then relied on HASTUS, including YardAssistant and PlanFleet, to apply these rules in daily operations. In practical terms, the application helps determine where each vehicle should be parked based on its next pull-out and planned activities. Supervisors now have a shared view of vehicles, depot constraints, and upcoming priorities.

Making better use of team expertise

By structuring daily activities in HASTUS, the tl enable depot teams to focus more on situations that require judgment and experience. Teams spend less time piecing information together and more time managing true exceptions.

RESULTS

Simplified processes. Harmonized practices. More reliable operations.

97%
parking operation
success rate

Increased reliability

1 shared parking and planning method

Harmonized practices

1 shared procedure for managing unexpected events

Less dependence on individual practices

Today, we have a shared framework for managing vehicle parking, preparation, and assignment. Decisions are more consistent from one depot to another, and we are better able to manage unexpected events in our daily operations.
