OC Transpo undertakes major HASTUS expansion

OC Transpo has contracted with GIRO to undertake a major expansion and upgrade of its HASTUS software installation. A GIRO client since 1989, the public transport operator for Ottawa, Canada’s capital, has several previous HASTUS upgrades under its belt, but this is its most far-reaching.

OC Transpo will add a range of planning and operations modules and upgrade its HASTUS installation to version 2016. In particular, the NetPlan planning module will open up new possibilities for managing the entire network at the service-definition level while balancing service quality and operational costs. The daily operations modules will replace previous in-house solutions, and HASTUS will also interface with a new computer-aided dispatch system.

The project forms part of the Transit Operations Modernization initiative launched by OC Transpo to bring about operational improvements across its network. It follows on from a comprehensive process review that fully documented the organization’s operational processes. The project is to be completed before OC Transpo’s new light rail line, the O-Train Confederation Line, comes into service in 2018.

“Expanding and upgrading our HASTUS installation are key elements of our Transit Operations Modernization initiative, especially as we progress toward the opening of the O-Train Confederation Line in 2018,” said Pat Scrimgeour, Assistant General Manager of Customer Systems and Planning with OC Transpo. “Our close collaboration with GIRO will allow us to continue to provide excellent service for our customers, as their travel needs change, and as we adapt the network to take full advantage of the benefits that the Confederation Line will bring.”

GIRO will introduce a wide variety of new functionalities to respond to OC Transpo’s particular requirements. The new technologies will replace former systems and manual analysis processes, providing close integration of ridership-data analysis, service planning, scheduling, work selection, timekeeping and payroll administration, as well as enabling close links to the new computer-aided dispatch software currently in development.
